'V' (TV series)

Ultimate trust and faith was placed in Velocity Stunts when Director Dave Barrett and Stunt Coordinator Gaston Morrison asked Dave Lane and Velocity Stunts to throw Dave Barrett with a hand held camera off a high-rise building in downtown Vancouver to follow stunt performer Marny Eng with both of them stopping just feet above the pavement!

The Velocity team installed the two 2D vector rigs that were capable of speeds to 80 feet/sec (24m/sec) utilizing the building and an 80 ton crane for the rigging points. Using Velocity’s 2D computer controlled winches known for their control, speed, flexibility, efficiency and safety, Gaston and Velocity Stunts created the flight paths for Marny and Dave. Both rigs could be controlled separately and then synchronized using Velocity’s high-speed motion control technology.

Following rehearsals, Dave Barrett and First Assistant Director Rob Duncan who had worked previously with Dave Lane on the pilot of the television series “The Vampire Diaries” geared the unit up and started shooting immediately. Only a few half speed passes were required to let Dave Barrett familiarize himself with the rig and Marny’s flight path. Velocity’s motion control system allowed Dave Barrett the freedom to quickly change and experiment with a number of performer and camera flight path variations and synchronization.

The end product was an action sequence combining performer and camera flying that had the produced a dynamic and powerful image.
