Human Target
(TV series)

Team Velocity got their favourite kind of challenge when Director/Producer Steve Boyum and Stunt Coordinator Dean Choe asked Dave Lane of Velocity Stunts to fly their performers and camera together.

With zero prep time Dave immediately assembled the small cohesive team that had met all of Dean’s previous challenges. The team consisted of Chris Atkinson, Dean Hart and Andre Jette.

The in camera live action scene on the episode “Embassy Row” called for principal cast Mark Valley and Emmanuelle Vaugier to jump a motorcycle during a high-octane chase scene! Dave and his team used their “Pathfinder” high-speed winches to fly the motorcycle, fine tuning the accelerations, speeds and flight paths to meet the capabilities of Mark, Emmanuelle and their stunt doubles. To capture the live action stunt sequence on film in the most creative way possible Steve and Dean asked Dave to fly their camera using Velocity’s “Vectorcam” cable camera rig. Both rigs were controlled and synchronized using Velocity’s high-tech motion control technology.

On the shoot day Dave and his team earned the trust of Mark, Emmanuelle and their stunt doubles John Krault and Maja Stace-Smith, with rigs that were consistently repeatable and pinpoint accurate. For Mark and Emmanuelle it was a real thrill to have had the opportunity to perform their own stunts in such an exhilarating action scene. John and Maja put in a stellar performance riding the bike and rig at speeds of 12m/sec and 1G accelerations creating a very realistic action packed scene!

Dean had nothing but the highest expectations for Dave and his team’s performance as he had work with them on several occasions on similar action scenes. He was rewarded with a professional, efficient and creative days work.

For Steve the day was a big success, Dave’s team and Velocity’s technology far exceeded his expectations and allowed him the utmost in creative freedom. Steve was able to get the very best performances from his cast and stunt performers due to their trust and comfort riding the Velocity rigs. Steve and Director of Photography Phil Linzey were happy to be able to produce shots with Velocity’s Vectorcam rig that were not only extremely easy to build but provided a unique look rarely achieved on feature film productions let alone network television. Dave and his team’s efficient pacing assisted First Assistant Director Sam Harris in getting him through his jam-packed call sheet enabling him to stay on schedule for his afternoon and evening’s work.

Accomplishing a dramatic live action stunt sequence of this nature on a television timeline and budget always adds an extra element of challenge. Team Velocity has had a lot of experience with this type of challenge and in just three and a half days they, pre-rigged, rehearsed, shot and struck both the performer and the camera rigs! When the final numbers were in, Production Manager Yvonne Melville was happy with how accurately Dave’s original budget matched them.

At the end of the day Dave felt he and his team had achieved all of Velocity’s missions: add value to the production both creatively and technically, exceed the clients’ expectations, achieve all of the above with in the producers’ budget parameters.
