What do you get when you mix it up with Team Velocity's Pathfinder and Vector-Cam high speed winch flying systems? A live action wire stunt sequence so spectacular and well photographed it had Paul Shapiro (Main Unit Director) and Rob McLachlan (DOP) stunned, euphoric, cheering and applauding for a job well done by their live action wire stunt team after the first take.
Dean Choe (Stunt Coordinator) knew the potential creative possibilities that Team Velocity had to offer by combining their performer and camera flying systems, but until now had not yet found the right project to tap this potential. Bionic Woman proved to be the project with the Producers' progressive attitudes and their faith in Dean's talents (and a solid performance by Team Velocity on the series opener). Dean felt confident to offer up to Paul and Rob the tools to create and photograph a live action wire stunt sequence that would not only likely be a network television first, but is also rarely even attempted on large budget feature films.
Working closely with Monte Thompson (Series Key Stunt Rigger and Assistant Stunt Coordinator) and Dean, Team Velocity used their 'Pathfinder' high speed winch performer flying system and their 'Vector-Cam', cable suspended camera flying system coupled to the latest Libra 5, 3 axis camera head (provided and teched by Scott Simpson of Simpco Camera Support) to create a visually spectacular, live action wire stunt sequence. Two 2D vector rigs, one for performer flying and one for camera flying were controlled on the same computer user interface allowing separate motion control and synchronization of timing between performer and camera.
After the initial rehearsals were completed with Michelle Ryan's stunt double (Jo-Anne Leech) Dean and the Producers continued to show their faith in Team Velocity's high speed winch performer flying system and in our conscientious and professional attitude towards safety, by letting Michelle Ryan perform much of this exciting live action wire stunt sequence.
Look for this live action sequence in an upcoming episode of Bionic Woman and check the NBC website for the webisode 'Running on Rigs'.
